What happens if Free / Busy Support isn't enabled and I try to use Free Busy with Outlook XP?
Answer
There are two known errors that may occur if you do not enable Free / Busy Support with Outlook XP or do not meet the minimum requirements. To solve either or both of these issues turn off the Outlook client's Free/Busy publishing by clicking Tools > Calendar Options > Free/Busy Options and uncheck the "Publish at my location" checkbox. Then exit and re-open Microsoft Outlook. Before proceeding with these instructions however you should review the two errors below and confirm that you are experiencing one of them, and not something else.

Error #1:

ERROR: "An unexpected error occurred: Not enough memory available to complete the operation. Close other programs to make more memory available; and then try again." This error may occur when Microsoft Outlook XP (2002) tries to send and receive free/busy data to a Free/Busy Server."

This is a known Microsoft Outlook XP issue with Free/Busy and Outlook 2002. Reference Article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307034&Product=ol2002

Error #2:
