| | Storing Outlook Personal Folder Files (.pst files) on a network drive | | Question | | Does OfficeCalendar work if users' .pst files are stored on a network drive and not on their local computer? | Answer | Microsoft states in strong language that Outlook .pst files are not stable when stored on a network drive, and should only be located locally, on the same PC as the installation of Outlook that is accessing them. Consequently, OfficeCalendar is not supported or guaranteed to function in any environment that Microsoft expressively states is not a stable environment for Outlook.
Per Microsoft's own knowledge base article, all Outlook operations take longer when the .pst file is stored somewhere else, other than the local PC. Additionally, "Write" operations can take approximately 4 times longer than "Read" operations. Quoting the Microsoft KB article, "Additionally, the use of a .pst file over a network connection may result in a corrupted .pst file if the connection degrades or fails."
The OfficeCalendar synch product is a product that forces Outlook to continually "Read" and "Write" data to/from the .pst file with every synch. The "Write" operations are substantial as the OfficeCalendar synch adds sub-calendar, sub-contact, and sub-task folders for other users and populates these folders with shared data. If your .pst files are on a network drive, you are inhibiting Outlooks ability to perform these operations in the way it was designed.
